The movie theater in the Fort Henry Mall in Kingsport, Tennessee is getting a big-screen upgrade. A groundbreaking ceremony was held this week for a project that will bring a 400-seat IMAX auditorium to the NCG - Kingsport.

Located southeast of downtown Kingsport at the intersection of Fort Henry Drive and Memorial Boulevard, the movie theater has been operated by NCG Cinemas since taking over from Frank Theatres in 2017. The company operates 27 locations in nine states.

According to news reports (see below), the IMAX auditorium will have 400 seats as well as "elevated" concessions and drinks, whatever that means. Previous news reports listed a 200-seat auditorium with a 70'x40' screen. Does that mean that the screen has been enlarged to match the additional seating capacity? Nonetheless, construction is expected to begin soon with completion scheduled for mid-2026. The movie theater will remain open during construction.

This project has been in the works since 2023, when NCG and IMAX announced additional installations in Georgia and Tennessee to join the company's IMAX location at the NCG - Grand Blanc in Michigan. At that time, this project was expected to open in March 2025.

Kingsport is a good location for a new IMAX theater, as there aren't any within a reasonable distance. The closest IMAX locations are the AMC Northlake 14 in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Regal Simpsonville in Simpsonville, South Carolina. Both are more than 120 miles from this location.
