The Academy Award-winning 2012 movie version of Les Miserables is coming back to theaters exclusively in Dolby Cinema at AMC locations for a one-week engagement in February. The movie has been remastered in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos immersive sound for its release on February 23, 2024.

Victor Hugo's tale was first published in 1862 and the stage musical based on the novel has been playing in London since 1985. It features a French peasant in 19th-century France named Jean Valjean, who served nineteen years in jail after stealing a loaf of bread. He struggles to restart his life, but is hounded by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean could be reformed. All this is happening against the backdrop of a revolution, involving a band of idealists intent on change and a mother hoping to protect her child from the harshness of existence on the bottom of society.

After the movie opened December 25, 2012, it stayed in the Top 10 Box Office report for six weeks and went on to win three Oscars for Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway for her portrayal of Fantine, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing and Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling. Hugh Jackman did an incredible job of portraying Jean Valjean using his singing voice to great effect. Russell Crowe is a slightly better actor in his role as Javert, but he can't hold a candle to the much more talented singer that was his co-star.

The press release was issued by Universal Pictures, which quotes director Tom Hooper and producer Cameron Mackintosh:

"It's hard to believe that it is already over 10 years since our musical film of Les Misérables opened to become one of the most successful movie adaptations of a stage musical of all time. We are delighted that to mark the occasion. Universal Pictures is re-releasing a re-mastered version of the film, with a major remix of tracks in Dolby Atmos and a remaster of the entire picture in Dolby Vision; coming to select cinemas."

Les Miserables is an incredible stage musical, and the movie is very good as well. Seeing it up on the big screen with the remastered visuals and immersive sound will surely be an experience worth seeking out!

The movie also will be released February 14 in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, and in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on February 22. It will be released this spring in South Korea, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, and in August in Japan.
