The Silent Movie Theatre / Cinefamily in Los Angeles, California has closed permanently after shutting down in August 2017 due to allegations of improper conduct.

A notice posted on the theater's web site today stated that Cinefamily was no more, and that the Silent Movie Theater may return in the near future. The notice posted on The Cinefamily's web site appears in full below:

Statement from the Board of Directors

The Board of Directors announces with regret that it has decided, after exhaustive analysis of the organization's current operational, reputational and financial status, to officially shut down The Cinefamily.

As was previously announced, the Board suspended The Cinefamily's operations in August to allow for an independent investigation following allegations of sexual misconduct made against some of The Cinefamily's executives, the resignations of Cinefamily executive director Hadrian Belove and Board member Shadie Elnashai, and reports of misconduct in the media. While no victims emerged to corroborate the allegation of rape widely circulated in an anonymous email, the investigation identified serious concerns, including breaches of acceptable behavior alleged to have happened at Cinefamily offices and events; a climate that discouraged employees and volunteers from reporting distressing workplace incidents and/or made them feel unheard if they did so; and critical lapses in communication from the executive management to the Board.

The damage caused to the organization by the conduct of some and the crippling debt now facing the Cinefamily are, in the Board’s view, irreparable. While the Board recognizes that the decision to close The Cinefamily will disappoint many of our loyal members, we feel strongly that we have made the right decision. This decision also comes amid the very necessary and overdue conversation about sexual assault and harassment in our industry. As individuals, we applaud the difficult work of victims everywhere who have come forward and spoken up about misconduct, and we continue to hope that any person mistreated by anyone connected to The Cinefamily will seek help in reporting any such incidents to the appropriate authorities. As stated previously, the Board considers any of the alleged inappropriate behavior to be utterly indefensible, and we condemn it unequivocally.

The Silent Movie Theater, The Cinefamily's longtime home, will be closed and renovated by the landloard. The Board will establish a transition team to handle the organization's financial and legal affairs, and The Cinefamily Board will be dissolved. Tax-deductible membership donations and other donations will be acknowledged with forthcoming tax receipts.

Thank you to those who supported The Cinefamily these past 10 years and to the numerous dedicated and hard-working staff and volunteers. The Cinefamily was a unique institution with game-changing programming and a film-loving vitality. We hope a new organization will emerge that reflects the postive spirit of the film community and finds a way to again celebrate the best of cinema in a healthy environment.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Pacific Theatres at The Grove and the New Beverly Cinema.
