LucasFilm Delays 3D Conversions of Star Wars Prequels to Focus on New Installment

Hot on the heels of the news that Star Wars: Episode VII signed J.J. Abrams to direct, LucasFilm announced today that they are delaying the release of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones 3D and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith 3D indefinitely so that they can focus their efforts on the new movie.

The 3D conversions were due in theaters in September and October of this year, respectively, but now that Episode VII has a big-name director, it makes sense to concentrate on new material instead of extracting cash out of re-releasing movies already available on home video in 3D. Star Wars: Episode VII is currently scheduled for release in 2015.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 3D was released in theaters in February 2012 and it did respectable business, but the potential for two more 3D conversions likely pales in comparison to what is possible with a brand new Star Wars movie. Considering how many times Star Wars fans have been tapped for re-purchasing all six movies as well as theatrical re-releases, I think every Star Wars fan would take the route that Disney has chosen.
