The Cinemark CineArts at Sequoia in Mill Valley, California has closed.
Located on Throckmorton Avenue near Blithedale Avenue, the historic movie theater last updated its showtimes with us on October 4, 2023. Cinemark's website displays a brief notation that reads "Permanently Closed."
In 2022, the California Film Institute, which owns the Sequoia Theater building, submitted a proposal to convert the two-screen movie theater in a new four-screen cinema and education center. The historic facade above the street level would be maintained, according to some details on the Mill Valley city website. A new marquee would replicate the theater's 1947 design, which was replaced in 1999.
Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Lark Theater in Larkspur and the Larkspur Landing Cinema in Larkspur and the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael.
