The Downer Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin closed unexpectedly in September 2023, leaving moviegoers in the area without one of their favorite places to see a movie. While Landmark Theatres didn't see the value of keeping the movie theater running, Milwaukee Film has stepped up.

The non-profit hosts the Milwaukee Film Festival and operates the Oriental Theatre, which is less than a mile away on Farwell and North Avenues. That theater also was operated by Landmark Theatres, but Milwaukee Film took over in 2018 and has made upgrades to the historic theater since that time.
