Milwaukee, WI: Former State Theater Has Musical Future

Rendering of the theater building

The former State Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin hasn't shown movies since 1955, when it was turned into a music venue that hosted the likes of The Ramones, Dire Straits, The Police, Cheap Trick, and many others. Located near 27th and State streets, it suffered a devastating fire in 2017 that threatened its very existence.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that the theater, which dates back to 1915, will become The New State, and it will build upon its musical history:

The proposed $3.5 million conversion of a long-closed night club on Milwaukee's near west side into an all-ages music venue and music education center is moving forward.

That development, dubbed The New State, would combine a nonprofit arts group to help young people learn about the music business with for-profit businesses, including sound engineering studios, a store to sell T-shirts and other musician-branded merchandise and the sober all-ages performance venue.

While it's unfortunate that a historical movie theater can't return to its original roots, it's good to see the building survive and for part of its cultural legacy to be continued.
