Milwaukee, WI: The Milwaukee Public Museum Building an IMAX-Dome Theater

Posted on Saturday, November 5, 1994 and updated on Monday, February 4, 2013 2:15 PM

On November 4, 1994, the Milwaukee Public Museum broke ground on a new IMAX-Dome large-screen theater, which is scheduled to be completed in October, 1996. The theater, located just east of the current Museum building on the corner of 7th & Wells, is the first of its kind in Wisconsin.

The ground-breaking is part of a 3-stage construction process, which will combine the existing Museum facility with the IMAX-Dome theater and the relocated Discovery World museum. The three facilities, along with the MacArthur Square parking facility, will be connected via enclosed walkways, allowing patrons year-round access to any or all of the facilities. The picture above is the architect's rendition of the new theater and the campus formed by the three facilities.

The state-of-the-art IMAX-Dome theater is similar to large-screen theaters at Disney World, Cape Canaveral, and Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.

The spherical screen, which allows viewers to feel they are "part of the action," will span floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall, depicting scenes with remarkable clarity & realism. The theater will present educational and entertaining natural history and science films with subjects ranging from volcanoes to the wide expanses of the universe. The new IMAX-Dome theater will be capable of seating approximately 275 people per show.

The BigScreen Cinema Guide will publish this theater's schedule when it opens to the public. In the opinion of this author, this new theater is a welcome addition to Milwaukee's movie theater offerings.
