Moraga, CA: Rheem Theatre Reopens

Posted on Monday, June 18th, 2018 2:02 PM

The Rheem Theatre in Moraga, California has reopened. The movie theater, located near the intersection of Rheem Boulevard and Moraga Road, closed in January.

According to a recent article published in the East Bay Times, an agreement between the town, theater owner Mahesh Puri, and a non-profit organization has allowed the theater to reopen temporarily until a more permanent solution can be found:

The historic Rheem Theatre, which closed earlier this year amid mounting costs but was saved by a Moraga Town Council agreement in March, will be reopening once again in mid-June.

In January, theater operator Derek Zemrak said he could no longer afford the upkeep on the 61-year-old building. In March, the Town of Moraga, theater owner Mahesh Puri and the nonprofit Moraga Community Foundation reached an agreement to save the theater, leading to the reopening.

“Opening the theatre in June will allow Moragans to enjoy movies throughout the summer break as they have for so many years,” said Tom Schnurr, president of the Moraga Community Foundation, in a release.

“Derek Zemrak and Leonard Pirkle are the logical team to continue operating the Rheem Theatre – we are pleased an agreement could be reached,” he said. Zemrak Pirkle has operated the theater for the past eight and a half years.

“Zemrak Pirkle is excited to be working with the Moraga Community Foundation,” Leonard Pirkle said in the release. “This interim arrangement will see theatergoers once again walking through the front doors and infusing community energy into the art deco theater.
