The girls had their say with 40 Must-See Movies for Girls Night!, but since I run this site, I get my chance to make a case for great romantic movies to share with that special someone! Whether it's for Valentine's Day or any random Friday night, watching a great movie together is never a bad idea!
Take a look at the following movie ideas for your next romantic movie night, and let us know what your favorites are! Join the conversation on our Facebook page
Couples at Odds
Couples who are at odds with each other is a recurring theme of romantic movies. It makes a clear contrast when they inevitably get together at the end, but I'm not a huge fan of watching couples fight for most of the movie and then somehow get together right before the credits roll. However, I do appreciate when a well-done movie can strike that right balance between tension that creates sparks and grinding on the nerves.
- One Fine Day [1996]
- Pride & Prejudice [2005]
- Out of Sight [1998]
- Ticket to Paradise [2022]
- Fools Rush In [1997]
Best Friends Make the Best Couples
When you marry your best friend, you naturally gravitate toward stories about other couples that are in the same situation. One of these is a perennial New Year's Eve favorite for many, but the rest are my favorites hands-down!
- My Best Friend's Wedding [1997]
- When Harry Met Sally... [1989]
- The Holiday [2006]
- On Golden Pond [1981]
Unlikely Attachments
I'm sure one of these movies will make you scratch your head, but if you think about it, you'll see that I'm not too far out on it. The other one is a classic story that was remade, and it edges out its predecessor. I'll let you figure out which is which!
Bonding Over Food
There's a reason the primary date is dinner. Enjoying good food is a great shared experience and allows you to talk while keeping the awkward moments to a minimum. Plus, if you choose well, you get to enjoy some great food! Here are three great movies surrounding the love of cooking and loving while cooking.
- No Reservations [2007]
- The Hundred-Foot Journey [2014]
- Julie & Julia [2009]
Adventures & Road Trips
Not every romantic movie has to be a sappy tear-fest. Adventures together can be that shared experience that brings a couple together like nothing else can!
- National Treasure [2004]
- The Mummy [1999]
Second Chances
Missing out on the love of your life is a popular cliche when it comes to romantic movies, and finding them again after you thought all hope was lost is a great feeling to experience with these stories.
- Wicker Park [2004]
- The Family Man [2000]
- While You Were Sleeping [1995]
- An Affair to Remember [1957]
More Movies to Consider
Sometimes you just can't put a movie in a box and label it with a simple (but imaginative) category. There's a little something in these movies for everyone to enjoy!
- The American President [1995]
- Notting Hill [1999]
- Beauty and the Beast [2017]
- Mamma Mia! [2008]
- Father of the Bride [1991]
