Searchlight Pictures has announced that its upcoming drama, Nomadland, will open in theaters and online on the Hulu streaming service Friday, February 19, 2021.

In the movie, Frances McDormand stars as Fern, a woman facing hard economic times, packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. It landed on the list of former President Barack Obama's Favorite Movies of 2020. It was recently voted as the best film of 2020 by the National Society of Film Critics and best independent film of 2020 at the Gotham Awards.

At a point in time when many movies are being released onto streaming services in addition to, or instead of, theaters, this news doesn't come as much of a surprise. What might be a little confusing is that it's being released on Hulu instead of Disney+, which are both operated by Searchlight parent company Disney. It further blurs the distinction between the two streaming services and it causes those that have signed on to one of the company's streaming services only to see a movie that sounds very interesting released on the other service, requiring an additional subscription fee. Maybe the distinctions between the two will shake out over the course of 2021, but at this point, it seems like a counterproductive move to have two movie streaming services.
