The Phoenix Theatres - Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted, Ohio will be opening in June 2024.

Located in the Great Northern Mall along I-480 about 15 miles southwest of downtown Cleveland, the movie theater last showed movies in January 2023 when it closed as the Regal Great Northern Mall & RPX. This will be the eighth location for Michigan-based Phoenix Theatres and the second in Ohio (the Phoenix Theatres - Northtowne Mall in Defiance).

News of the theater's reopening was announced recently in a press release (see below) and on the theater's Facebook page. Among the upgrades that will greet guests when the theater opens June 13 are premium auditoriums the company branded as ENCORE. Reportedly the largest screens in Cleveland at 60 feet wide, ENCORE will have Dolby Atmos immersive sound capability. Every auditorium will have heated reclining seats.

“We wanted to do something truly spectacular and enhance the cinema experience to a new level," said Jordan Hohman, executive in charge of project development for Phoenix Theatres. “Each auditorium will feature Dolby 7.1 digital sound and loudspeaker systems, and presented for the first time in Cleveland, we will be introducing Dolby ATMOS, the latest innovation in immersive sound technology. Dolby’s ATMOS process brings the next evolution in sound to the cinema, as each auditorium becomes a three-dimensional soundscape that envelops the audience in a truly immersive audio experience."

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at 6pm. The theater will open to the public on Thursday, June 13 at 3pm.

Press Release

PHOENIX THEATRES GREAT NORTHERN MALL ANNOUNCES GRAND OPENING DAY THURSDAY, JUNE 13th

May 21, 2024

North Olmsted, Ohio – Phoenix Theatres, a Michigan-based movie theatre chain, is excited to announce that the Grand Opening of Phoenix Theatres at Great Northern Mall is Thursday, June 13. The new Phoenix Theatres will include ENCORE, Cleveland’s largest movie screens measuring up to 60 feet wide featuring Dolby ATMOS, a spatial sound experience that puts the audience in the center of the action. Every auditorium will feature 100 percent heated reclining seats with reserved tickets available.

Combining Dolby ATMOS with Christie’s 4K Digital Cinema projection and newly developed micro-perforated screens will provide the viewer with the clearest and largest possible picture and the most immersive movie-going experience.

Hohman added: “We also discovered along the way that the auditorium room sizes could accommodate the biggest screens in Cleveland, and we designed every theatre with the largest screens possible, giving us a spectacular picture size up to 60 feet wide."

Heated reclining seating is a customer favorite and a signature feature in all Phoenix Theatres. Cory Jacobson, owner of Phoenix Theatres, says he is excited for the company to introduce this amenity to Cleveland-area customers soon.

“When we discovered several years ago the newest feature available was heated seats, we thought this would make the experience even more comfortable and perfect to warm everyone up on a chilly day or even in the middle of summer," he said.

Phoenix Theatres group has, “always strived to find unique ways to give our theatres character," Jacobson continued. “Movie theatres in the past were synonymous with big jazzy marquee signs, adding an element of showmanship to movie-going. Our new theatre at Great Northern Mall needed to develop a character all its own."

So, in taking inspiration from the Chicago Theatre’s iconic vertical blade sign, Great Northern’s newly designed vertical sign captures the classic theme and excitement of a sign built in 1928, adding a new sense of showmanship and flare rarely found in modern theatre signage.

“I am personally thrilled with the return of a movie theatre to the City of North Olmsted. I applaud Phoenix Theatres for what they are doing to revitalize the space formerly occupied by Regal Cinemas," said Nicole Dailey Jones, Mayor of North Olmsted. “It’s a great thing for not only Great Northern Mall, with whom we have an excellent partnership and relationship, but it is also terrific for the city. I hope that our residents – and those from other neighboring communities – will take advantage of all, the new theatre will offer."

In a recent statement, Najla J. Kayyem, Executive Vice President of Pacific Retail Capital Partners, said, “Introducing Phoenix Theatres to Great Northern Mall highlights our dedication to assembling tenant mixes that intrigue and offer distinctive experiences for our guests. This new theater serves as a prime illustration of our ongoing efforts to elevate our property experiences, further solidifying Pacific Retail Capital Partners' position as a preferred choice for retailers."

Phoenix Theatres at Great Northern Mall will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony with the North Olmsted Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, June 12th at 6:00pm. Representatives of the Lorain Chamber of Commerce will also participate in the event. The theatre will officially open to the public on Thursday, June 13th at 3:00 pm for the premiere of “Inside Out 2" in ENCORE featuring Dolby ATMOS and “Bad Boys 2" presented in ENCORE featuring Dolby ATMOS. These films will kick off the busy summer blockbuster film season that will include: “A Quiet Place – Day One," “Twister," “Despicable Me 4," and “Deadpool & Wolverine."

Moviegoers can reserve their tickets today at Phoenixmovies.net or by visiting the theatre’s box office.
