OPPO Digital Confirms Upcoming Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Posted on Monday, September 26, 2016 and updated on Thursday, September 29, 2016 1:14 PM

OPPO Digital has confirmed that they will be releasing an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the UDP-203, in the near future. The company has been saying to its fans that they planned to release a player, but were mum on the specifics. The news of an actual Ultra HD Blu-ray player from the company was first broken by Chris Heinonen on Twitter on September 15th.

OPPO Digital's Facebook page now has an official announcement along with a way for people to sign up for more information when it becomes available.

Our next generation Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray player, the UDP-203, is in active development. We intend to have it ready for release by the end of this year, but we will take as long as necessary to perfect the player. As such, there is no set release date yet.

Early reports are that the player will replace the company's BDP-103 in their lineup, at the same $499 price point. If that happens, that's great news for thousands of home theater enthusiasts that have become fans of OPPO's players for their performance, reliability, and the company's customer service. Before you get too excited, the "end of 2016" timeframe is an estimate, but I'm sure the company will be releasing more details when they can nail down a more specific release date.

Forbes magazine published an article recently that detailed their first hand-on experience with the player and an interview with an OPPO representative. Here are some of the features mentioned in that article:

  • Disc types supported: Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, DVD Audio, SACD, CD, AVCHD
  • File types supported: AVI, MKV, MOV, M2TS/TS, AIFF, ALAC, APE, DSD (256 and 128 up to 5.1 channels), FLAC and WAV
  • DLNA and SMB network playback
  • Hard-drive playback (up to 16 TB)
  • Gold-plated connections: two HDMI (one HDMI 2.0, one HDMI 1.4 for audio only). HDMI input for external devices
  • 7.1 channel analog output
  • Two USB ports
  • Control via RS-232, infrared, IP control, and trigger in/out
  • Not currently supported: streaming apps (Netflix, Amazon), Dolby Visiion (currently supports HDR10 only)

That last item might concern some people, but it's an indicator of how new this technology is. The company should concentrate on rock-solid and top-tier playback of physical and digital media first, and then worry about streaming services. There are so many other devices out there that do streaming (you probably already own multiple) that I don't think missing them on this player is a problem at all. They will likely be added in the future, but that's not a guarantee.

Those who are looking for Dolby Vision support need to be patient. That technology is so new, nothing completely supports it yet. Many are hoping that OPPO will be the flag-bearer in the player market, but OPPO is being very careful about setting expectations that it won't. If it does, either at release or via a future firmware update, so much the better, but buyers shouldn't get upset if it doesn't.
