The Hollywood Theater in the Dormont area southwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania closed in April 2023, but moviegoers in the area will be happy to know that it is reopening in October as the Row House Cinema - Hollywood! The new owners also operate the Row House Cinema - Lawrenceville.
Located on Potomoc Avenue just north of West Liberty Avenue, the historic theater has had quite a history. It originally opened in 1926 as a silent film theater, but it was converted to sound in 1929. It closed in 1988 and reopened in 1990. It was sold to CineMagic in 1995, which then closed in 1998. It was reopened in 2007 by Hollywood Partners, LLC. but closed in 2008. It reopened in 2009, and then closed again in 2010. It reopened in May 2011, and was featured in the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The 2012 movie was directed by local native Stephen Chbosky and starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, and Mae Whitman, where the friends participate in regular performances of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was purchased by the Theatre Historical Society of America in 2018.
An open house is planned for October 1, 2023, with an afternoon of free movies and a preview of the renovations the new owners have planned. Movie posters will be sold, a Film Club membership will be given away, and they are looking for seat sponsorships to help fund the renovation project.
To see what's playing and when, please visit the Showtimes page for the Row House Cinema - Hollywood. It appears that they also will be hosting midnight showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Until it reopens, moviegoers in the area will still need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the AMC Classic Mount Lebanon 6 in Mount Lebanon and the Harris Theatre in Pittsburgh.
