Racine, WI: Article Features Racine-area Movie Theaters of the Past

Posted on Tuesday, September 4th, 2018 2:24 PM

With the imminent demolition of the Marcus Park I & II in Racine, Wisconsin (read article), the Journal Times published an article recently about the theater as well as other theaters that once existed in Racine.

The city in July ordered the demolition of the Park Theatre, 3015 Washington Ave., which has become decrepit as its current owner, John Apple, has reportedly ignored city orders to repair the building.

Photos from the city show gaping holes scattered on the walls, with rust and decay evident throughout the entire building. A pipe backup has also reportedly spewed 5 inches of raw sewage into the basement. The building, which shuttered as a theater in 1987, is not considered a protected landmark, meaning its demolition will likely not be impeded.

In addition to the Park Theatre, the article mentions the Granada TheatreMarc 1 & 2 Cinema, Marcus Regency Value Cinemas, Marcus Westgate - Racine, and the Uptown Theatre, as well as others that we don't have in our records at this time. It's an interesting read, especially if you're in the Racine area and/or remember when these theaters showed movies on the big screen.

Currently, Racine has no operating movie theaters, with the closest being the Marcus Renaissance Cinema in Sturtevant.
