Regal Theatres parent Cineworld announced recently that it will be closing all locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland until further notice.

The Facebook page for Regal posted the graphic above, which reads:

In response to an increasingly challenging theatrical landscape and sustained key market closures, Regal will suspend operations at all theatres at close of business on Thursday, October 8, 2020 until further notice.

In the United States, the company's 500+ theaters are operated under the brand names of Regal Theatres, Edwards, and United Artists. We are seeing more than 250 locations are already not showing movies today, including many locations that haven't opened since March.

Like most theaters across the country, the company shuttered its locations in March 2020 in response to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Some locations (but not all) re-opened and started playing the smaller releases and previous titles, but that only goes so far to support an operation built on getting large volumes of people buying concessions and watching movies.

Regal's news followed the announcement last week that the upcoming James Bond movie, No Time to Die, was being delayed from November until April 2021. More such release date changes are likely unless theaters in more markets are able to operate at all, or at least at closer to full capacity, and attract crowds that make it feasible to operate the theater building.
