The upcoming animated comedy Rio originally received a PG rating from the MPAA for "mild off-color humor," but we found out today that the movie has been edited and is now rated a more little-kid-friendly "G" rating.
The change will no doubt open up the movie to a wider audience, as sharp-eyed parents of youngsters will be wary of anything beyond G-rated movies. Even G-rated movies can have their share of intense moments, so if something gets a PG rating, there is reason for additional concern.
In this case, where it appears to be related to dialogue, it probably wasn't a major concern, but as long as the movie wasn't being compromised in the process, why not make it more approachable for all ages?
Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there's another – and that she's a she – he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio.
But it's far from love at first sight between the domesticated and flight-challenged Blu and the fiercely independent, high-flying female, Jewel. Unexpectedly thrown together, they embark on an adventure of a lifetime, where they learn about friendship, love, courage, and being open to life's many wonders.
The movie opens in theaters on Friday, April 15th, 2011 in 2D and in 3D (listed here as, of course, Rio 3D). For more information about the movie, including photos, videos, and links to the official web site and more, please see the Movie Information page!
