The Theatre Box in San Diego, California opened December 14, 2018 in the building formerly occupied by the Reading Cinemas Gaslamp 15 at Fifth Avenue and G Street.
The Reading Cinema was renovated extensively, and it marks the first luxury movie theater by TCL Chinese Theatres, which also operates the famous TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX and the Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood. Reduced from the fifteen auditoriums that the Reading Cinemas operation had when it closed in 2016, the eight auditoriums feature leather recliners and dine-in service from the Sugar Factory American Brasserie. In addition to food items like woodfired pizza, burgers, and red velvet pancakes, the Sugar Factory offers over 500 treats, such a 60 ounce cocktail and ice cream sandwiches. Also in the building is the Chocolate Lounge, which will have DJs and cocktails for before or after-movie enjoyment.
The new theater is just a few blocks away from the UA Horton Plaza 8, which also has eight screens, but probably not the luxury amenities that can be found in the new theater. That should mean that both locations will find their own audiences.
