San Francisco, CA: The Lumiere Theatre Closing September 23, 2012

Posted on Friday, September 21, 2012 10:34 AM

The San Franscisco Chronicle is reporting that the Lumiere Theatre in San Francisco, California is closing after the end of business Sunday, September 23, 2012:

The Lumiere Theatre, a central venue for independent film in San Francisco, will close Sunday evening.

Landmark Theatres, the Los Angeles chain that has operated the Lumiere since 1991, has lost its lease and could not come to terms with the landlord, according to Steve Indig, senior regional publicist for Landmark.

The three-screen Lumiere Theatre was built in 1967, according to Landmark Theatres' web site. It specialized in independent fare, which is evident in its current slate of movies, which includes The Intouchables, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Keep the Lights On.

Fortunately for moviegoers that are looking for those kinds of movies, Landmark has several options nearby. The Embarcadero Center Cinema has five screens and reportedly better parking options. (Until last night, they were also playing the latter two movies mentioned above.) Landmark's Clay Theatre, Bridge Theatre, and Opera Plaza Cinemas also serve up non-traditional movies, and the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas offers a mix as well. View a full list of nearby theaters.
