The only movie theater in San Juan Capistrano, California has closed. The last day of operation for the Regency San Juan Capistrano was July 27, 2025.

According to an article published in The Capistrano Dispatch (see below), the theater struggled with rising costs and changes in the area, including paid parking. Apparently, the theater's lease was ending and its challenges did not justify renewing the agreement. The article mentions that plans are being made to convert the movie theater into a live entertainment venue.

The movie theater was operated by Regency Theatres, which has 17 locations in California, Arizona, and Hawaii.

According to our records, the theater originally opened December 15, 1989 as the Edwards Franciscan Plaza Cinemas. It featured THX certification in all five auditoriums. It was also known as the Edwards Franciscan Plaza 5. Edwards Theatres was acquired by Regal Cinemas in 2002. Regency Theatres took over in 2010 and opened it as the four-screen Regency San Juan Capistrano.
