Santa Cruz, CA: Regal Riverfront Stadium Twin Closed

Posted on Saturday, July 14th, 2018 2:13 PM

The Regal Riverfront Stadium Twin in Santa Cruz, California closed July 11, 2018, according to a news article published recently in the Santa Cruz Sentinel:

The doors at the Regal Cinemas Riverfront Twin shut this week after 48 years, leaving the landlord to look for a new tenant for the space.

The property at 155 S. River St. has been in the hands of the Cournale family of San Francisco for three decades or more, according to Curt Cournale, president of Cournale & Co., founded by his grandfather.

“We reached out to them about renewing,” he said of Regal Cinemas, which was acquired by Cineworld in March. “There was no interest.”

The theater originally opened in 1970 as the United Artists Riverfront Twin. Being a two-screen theater right down the road from the nine-screen Regal Cinemas Santa Cruz 9 certainly didn't help the theater's chances when the Regal spreadsheet machines start spinning.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the aforementioned Regal locations, as well as the Del Mar Theatre and the Nickelodeon Theatre, both of which are about a mile away.
