Black Friday has shaping up to be a nearly month-long promotion instead of just one day, and we'll bring you sales that we think are notable, including this 50% discount on the Amazon Fire Stick 4K!

Buy the Fire TV Stick 4K from Amazon.com

This streaming media player was released in October and by virtue of its name and the photo above, it's a stick that plugs directly into the HDMI port of your TV or A/V receiver. Power is derived from a USB adaptor that plugs into the side of the unit.

Amazon's website highlights the following features:

  • 4K Ultra HD with support for Dolby Vision, HDR, and HDR10+
  • Dolby Atmos and 7.1 channel audio support
  • Alexa Voice Remote - Search and launch content with your voice. Get to favorite apps quickly with preset buttons.
  • Control power and volume with one remote
  • 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band MIMO WiFi support

If you desire WiFi 6 support, Amazon also makes the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which also supports Live View Picture-in-Picture, which allows you to view a security camera (for example) in a window.

We have used the first version of the Fire Stick 4K since it was introduced in 2018, and it's a very capable performer. At first, there were some issues with some apps not being supported because Amazon and certain apps wouldn't play nice together, but those issues seem to have been resolved for at least mainstream apps.

When we ran into trouble with the Roku Premiere not being able to support Dolby Atmos sound in the Netflix app, we purchased another one in December 2020. That device appears to be functionally identical to the one that is now available, save for the new one having app shortcut buttons on the remote for Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu.

Like other stick-based media players, the Fire Stick 4K uses a small bluetooth remote control. It also has voice support, which we've found to be handy in limited instances. I have found myself hitting the wrong button often on the remote, and the addition of yet more buttons is probably not going to help that issue at all.

One of the best features of the Roku Premiere is that it retains an IR remote control, so it can be controlled using a universal remote. To our knowledge, every stick/dongle-type of streamer is not compatible with universal remotes, so if that's important to you, check out the sale going on right now on the Roku Premiere.

That said, the remote on the Fire TV 4K is pretty handy. It can be programmed to control the on/off, volume, and even input functions on many devices, including TVs and A/V receivers. If it all works for you, it can actually replace the universal remote on your coffee table, as long as you never want to use a Blu-ray player, DVR, or other non-Fire Stick device.

Just to cover our bases, keep in mind that this is a sale that is happening at the time of this writing. It may end at any time, so if you're interested, don't delay!
