The Seattle Cinerama Theatre in Seattle, Washington has closed for renovations, according to a message posted on the theater's web site and Facebook page:

We're renovating!

Cinerama fans! We’d like to let you know we are temporarily closing to renovate the theater.

Cinerama has been operating nearly nonstop for over five years and has had over a million guests through the doors. We will be making updates to keep Cinerama the most epic movie theater experience in Seattle.

We are excited to reopen later this year ahead of the year’s biggest films.

We’ll keep you updated on our progress via our social media channels. Stay tuned for more and can’t wait to see you back at Cinerama when we reopen.

An article in The Seattle Times (see below) mentions that the closure was sudden and employees were laid off, given a "months-long closure." We're not sure if "closed for renovations" is a euphamism for "we're done, but we don't want to admit it yet" as has been the case with some theaters that take that step, but we're going to give them the benefit of the doubt and keep the theater active.

In the meantime, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the AMC Pacific Place 11, the Big Picture Seattle, and many others.

According to the theater's web site, it opened in 1963, showing movies in the revolutionary Cinerama format. It soon added a 70mm projector so that it could show more mainstream movies (Cinerama didn't take the movie industry by storm). It declined in the 80s and 90s and a Grand Reopening was held in 1999 to celebrate a bunch of upgrades, including a Dolby Atmos sound system. It closed for renovations in August 2010. It was last renovated in 2014.
