The Skowhegan Drive-In Theatre in Skowhegan, Maine has closed for the season, and likely for good.

Located east of Skowhegan on Waterville Road, the drive-in movie theater dates back to 1954. After 68 years, it seems as though decreased attendance and the increased costs of business have caught up with it. An article published recently in the Morning Sentinel (see below) quotes owner Don Brown:

“The Bangor Drive-In and Saco Drive-In closed and looks like the Skowhegan drive-in might have to close as well,” owner Don Brown said. “In 2019, before the pandemic operations were normal,” Brown said. “By the second week of the 2022 season audience numbers fell through the floor. It’s unlike anything else before. We were at the point of operating just week-to-week.”

The theater's website is no longer accessible, so it would appear that it doesn't expect to need it again. Its Facebook page is still running, and the theater says that it is available for private rentals, but it's just a matter of time before a use is found for the property if another operator does not take over.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Spotlight Cinemas Strand Cinema in Skowhegan, as well as the Railroad Square Cinema and the Flagship Cinemas - Waterville in Waterville. The closest drive-in was the Bangor Drive-In, but it closed after the 2021 season. No other drive-ins are within a 50 mile radius.
