The Prime Cinemas Sonoma in Sonoma, California has closed.

Located in the Fiesta Plaza Shopping Center on Highway 12 at Siesta Way, the theater showed its last movies April 2, 2023. It placed the following announcement on its website and Facebook page:

It is with a heavy heart we announce that Prime Cinemas Sonoma will be closing permanently on April 2nd, 2023. We took over this 9-screen multiplex 2 years ago in the Spring of 2021, with the hopes that the industry would bounce back. Unfortunately, with the studios not immediately releasing their best films and the movie going public only returning to watch movies at about 50% of pre-Covid levels this is not enough to sustain this theater.

We appreciate everything that the previous owner, David Corkill, did in building this theater in 1994 and helping to provide access to first run movies in the Sonoma/Boyes Hot Springs community for the past 29 years. This theater has literally provided hundreds of first jobs to young people and we know many memories have been made here. Sadly, the community will have to travel a little further now to watch the latest Hollywood releases as the space will no longer function as a movie theater.

All gift cards and passes will be honored up until our Last day on Sunday ApriL 2nd.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help us try and save the Sonoma 9 theater. We appreciate you and your love of movies on the big screen.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Sebastiani Theatre in Sonoma and the Boulevard Cinemas 14 in Petaluma. Prime Cinemas continues to operate the Prime Cinemas Red Bluff in Red Bluff, which is a three-hour drive north.

The movie theater originally opened in 1994 as the Sonoma Cinemas (Cinema West), a four-screen location. By 2009, it had been expanded to nine screens. It closed in 2020. The theater reopened in 2021 as the Prime Cinemas Sonoma
