Springfield, MO: Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas - Springfield Opening June 19, 2017

Posted on Wednesday, June 14th, 2017 4:22 PM

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema logoThe Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas - Springfield in Springfield, Missouri will be opening to the public next week. Starting on Monday, June 19, 2017, they will be having a "soft opening" for staff training, with discounted food and non-alcoholic beverages. These staff training shows extend to Saturday (June 24th), so it's possible that they will open officially on or after Sunday, June 25, 2017.

The theater was previously the Wehrenberg Campbell 16 Cine, until Wehrenberg Theatres closed it on July 31, 2016. At the time, Wehrenberg cited decreased attendance, but Alamo's intention to enter the space happened very quickly after Wehrenberg's announcement, so Alamo must have felt that the location had potential for their operation.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema prides itself on its combination of "cold beer, hot movies, and delicious snacks and meals" according to its web site. The chain is one of the best-known for combining moviewatching with dining, and isn' shy about shutting down people who talk or use cell phones during movies (texting is right out, in case you're wondering).

The timing is good for moviegoers in the Springfield area, with the recent closure of the Premiere Palace, although the Alamo Drafthouse is going after a slightly different demographic. If Alamo's service doesn't appeal, nearby theaters include the Moxie Cinema, the Regal College Station Stadium 14, and the AMC Springfield 11.

I miss the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Kalamazoo. We got a great movie theater until they close it down for no reason.
