Despite two newcomers opening in theaters this weekend, the top movies from the previous weekend maintained their position at the top of the Box Office Report.
Superman enjoyed its second weekend at the top of the report, with more than $57M in (estimated) ticket sales. With a very normal 54% drop from its debut, it still commanded almost twice as much per theater as the new movies combined that opened this weekend. Also beating out the newcomers was Jurassic World: Rebirth, which had a strong showing in its third weekend, with a modest 42% drop in total box office, but dropping only about 30% in per-theater sales. More on that figure in a bit...
Who are the newcomers, you say? That would be the horror remake that is I Know What You Did Last Summer and the aren't-they-cute comedy, Smurfs. Unless there is some pent-up demand this week and heading into the weekend, these two will have a tough time staying in the Top 5 when The Fantastic Four: First Steps dominates the attention on Friday.
The Summer of Longevity
This summer has been marked by low week-to-week drops by many of the movies in theaters. We're used to seeing 60% decreases from week to week, as movies make big splashes and then have trouble coming back up for air. However, six of the returning movies to the Box Office report showed 51% or less drops from the week before. Brad Pitt's F1: The Movie had just a 26% drop in the box office despite losing more than 300 theaters in its fourth week of release, and Disney's Lilo & Stitch dropped just 45% in its ninth week!
That kind of staying power is good to see, and we're hoping that excitement for going to the theaters keeps up for the rest of the summer! With record high temperatures in many areas of the country, this is a great time to remind you that movie theaters offer air conditioning at no extra charge when you see one of their movies. Give yourself, your friends, and/or your family a break from the heat by going to the movies!
