The Essex 5 Cinemas in Tappahannock, Virginia has closed.

Located in the Essex Square shopping center along Highway 17, the five-screen movie theater appears to have closed without notice. The last time we received showtimes updates for the movie theater was Friday, December 30, 2022. A message posted on their Facebook page says that the theater was going to be "Closed for Renovations" from January 2 - 5, 2023, but a message posted on January 3 asks people to come to theater for refunds on gift cards:

If you have a gift card, please come to the theater Saturday, Jan 7 from 1 - 5 to speak to us about a refund.

The theater's website is now showing an error message as well, and we found an online real estate listing that showed the movie theater's 13,500 square feet of space as being "Coming Available 2023." All these factors likely indicate that a reopening date for the movie theater is not planned.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Compass Cinema Six in Irvington.
