The Princess Diaries opened in theaters 20 years ago on August 3, 2001.

Directed by Garry Marshall and starring Anne Hathaway as awkward teenager Mia Thermopolis who is just trying to survive each day of high school, and Julie Andrews as Mia's grandmother who comes to visit with the surprising information that Mia is a princess in line for the throne of the country of which Andrews is currently queen. Not only does Mia have to overcome the reaction of her classmates and the media, someone is trying to thwart her succession for their own gain! You know, a typical month in the life of a teenager...

Three years later, the primary cast returned for a sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which did a decent job of capturing the fun of the original while still being unique in its own way.
