It's New Year's Eve, which is a perfect time to reflect on the year that has passed. We thought it would be interesting to highlight the movies that made a big impact in 2025!

We're using the Weekly Box Office Report to build this list of movies. In the past year, 167 movies appeared in the report of the top 10 movies for the reported weekend. The most frequent movie appeared in 10 of those weeks, with three movies running for nine weeks, and seven movies had 8-week runs.

Mufasa: The Lion King

This movie got a head start on the year by releasing just before Christmas 2024. It stayed in the top 10 for 12 weeks, 10 of which were in the new year. It's a live action origin story of Mufasa, the patriarch of the kingdom portrayed in Disney's The Lion King (both the 1994 original animated movie and the live action version which was in theaters in 2019).

Rafiki relays the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka--the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny--their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.

Superman

Director James Gunn brought the somewhat beleaguered Superman story into a new DC universe showing a superhero who's driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of mankind. Opening in theaters in mid-July, it spent nine weeks on the Box Office report and showed movie audiences and critics alike that it is possible to make a good superhero movie in 2025, even when that superhero is the Man of Steel.

Dog Man

The end of January is not usually the time when good movies are released, but this one defied those odds and spent two weeks at #1 and eight weeks total in the Top 10 Box Office rankings. It just goes to show that you can draw audiences with the right movie at the right time!

When a dog and a police officer are injured together on the job, a life-saving surgery changes the course of history when Dog Man is born. Half dog, half man, Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve - as long as he isn't distracted by squirrels - as he doggedly pursues his arch-nemesis: the feline supervillain Petey the Cat. But the rivalry between Dog Man and Petey is upended by the arrival of an adorable kitten clone of Petey, Lil Petey, who changes the game for both of them. With humor, hijinks and heart, Dog Man explores the power of love (and kittens!) to bring even the most hostile (and hairy) foes together.

Captain America: Brave New World

Speaking of beleaguered topics, the Marvel superhero franchise is grasping for relevance and popularity with audiences. Supported by a raft of movies for the character (at least in name) and a TV series on Disney+, Anthony Mackie returns as the high-flying hero Sam Wilson, who's officially taken up the mantle of Captain America. After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

A Minecraft Movie

If you have a child of a certain age, you know about Minecraft. The game with the simple basis by infinite possbilities came to the big screen in April at the #1 spot, which it held for two weeks, and then continued to draw large crowds through the end of May.

Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn't just help you craft, it's essential to one's survival! Four misfits--Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)--find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

The Mission: Impossible franchise began in 1996, so many of the people seeing this movie might not have been alive when it started. However, Tom Cruise has been running toward danger, away from danger, ripping off masks, and thrilling audiences the entire time. Even though the previous installment sputtered a little, it did introduce the idea of AI playing an impactful role in the world (a little prescient, given current events), and this movie surpassed the box office receipts of the previous movie while it was in the Top 10.
