Tom Hanks' upcoming World War II movie, Greyhound, which was supposed to open in theaters in June, is now going straight to the Apple TV+ streaming service instead. The movie was delayed indefinitely in March as a result of the many release date shifts caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Variety is reporting that the streaming service bought the worldwide rights from Sony Pictures:

Apple TV Plus has bought worldwide rights from Sony Pictures to the Tom Hanks World War II drama “Greyhound” following a bidding war for the movie, which was previously set for a Father’s Day theatrical release.

Six-month-old Apple TV Plus announced the deal Tuesday. The streaming service did not disclose when it will release “Greyhound.”

Inspired by actual events from the Battle of the Atlantic, Tom Hanks stars as a first-time captain who leads a convoy of allied ships carrying thousands of soldiers across the treacherous waters of the “Black Pit” to the front lines of WW2. With no air cover protection for five days, the captain and his convoy must battle the surrounding enemy Nazi U-boats in order to give the allies a chance to win the war.
