MJR Digital Cinemas (formerly MJR Theatres) announced that they will be opening a new location in Troy, Michigan in 2014 called the MJR Troy Grand Digital Cinema 16. The new 16-screen movie theater will be located at Maple Road and Livernois Road, which was the site of a KMart store. Groundbreaking is scheduled for September and they hope to have it open by April or May 2014.
One of the auditoriums will be MJR's big-screen concept "MJR Epic Experience" with a 80'x48' screen (not a standard theater aspect ratio, but close to an IMAX screen) and a Dolby Atmos sound system. Up to 460 customers will be seated in "leather-like" lounge chairs that the press release says will be 3-4 inches wider than usual theater seats.
The closest movie theaters will be the AMC Star John R 15 in Madison Heights, the Birmingham 8 and Palladium 12 in Birmingham, and quite a few more within ten miles.
