Tulsa, OK: Village Movies 8 Closing May 6, 2018, New Entertainment Center Coming in Fall 2018

Posted on Friday, May 4th, 2018 10:13 AM

The Village Movies 8 in Tulsa, Oklahoma will be closing on Sunday, May 6, 2018. The news was announced on the theater's Facebook page recently:

Thank you Tulsa for allowing us to serve you these past couple of years! We had a great run and it was a lot of fun! We will be closing up shop and our last day open will be Sunday, May 6. We hope to see you there!

The Village Movies 8 is a second-run theater playing movies for reduced prices. Their final lineup includes Tomb Raider, Game Night, The Greatest Showman, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

The market for second-run movie theaters is tough, with heightened competition from myriad entertainment options, including streaming video services and tightening release windows, which means that movies are becoming available in the home and on portable devices just a few months after release. For example, two of their final movies have been on video for quite some time already. No matter how low your ticket prices are, that's a difficult way to make a living. Evidence of that is the recent closing of the Super Saver Cinema in Tulsa in February.

The silver lining to this announcement is that the theater will be renovated into a new entertainment center that is expected to open later this year! In December, Cinergy Entertainment announced that it will be converting the Village Movies 8 into an entertainment center that will not only have an eight-screen dine-in movie theater. but also offer bowling, games, and more. For more information about those plans, please read the Journal article titled Entertainment Center Replacing Village Movies 8 in 2018.

After Sunday, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Eton Square 6 Cinemas and the Cinemark Tulsa and IMAX.
