Disney Pixar's Turning Red has been shifted from movie theaters to the Disney+ streaming service exclusively, making it the third Pixar movie to be redirected away from a traditional theatrical release.

The animated comedy features Mei, an awkward teenager, with an added twist: when she gets too excited, she transforms into a giant red panda. It was to debut in theaters on March 11, 2022, and its release on Disney+ will keep that date.

The change was announced on the Disney+ Twitter feed:

Fans of Pixar are despairing the loss of yet another movie from the studio that brought us classics such as Toy Story, Cars, Finding Nemo, and more. The bad news started when Soul was moved to a streaming-only release in October 2020, and Luca was sent to Disney+ a few months before its June 2021 release. The last Pixar movie to hit the big screen was Onward on March 6, 2020.

Disney's other animated movies, meanwhile, have been hitting theaters. Most recently, Disney Animation has released Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto in March and December. Like all the studios, Disney has been throwing all kinds of release strategies against the wall to see what sticks.

The fate of the movies can be seen either as Disney using its biggest assets to bolster its fledgling streaming service, or it doesn't have confidence in the titles to justify a theatrical marketing campaign. Regardless of how you see this situation, Turning Red will not be shown in movie theaters in March.

Let's hope that it's the last Pixar movie to be kept from theaters!
