Friday, August 21, 2020 marks the day that the first mainstream wide release has opened in theaters in months, and not coincidentally, it also marks the day when there are more movie theaters open than we've seen in months!

Russell Crowe's Unhinged opens in more than 1,000 theaters tonight and tomorrow as movie theaters under the brands of AMC, Cinemark, Marcus Theatres, and others open their doors after a very long break. Movie theaters around the country closed suddenly in March 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and for many months, only drive-in theaters were serving a majority of moviegoers.

As restrictions relaxed, a few movie theaters opened, showing classic and not-so-classic movies from the past, but the industry was locked in a battle between the chicken and the egg. Movie studios didn't want to open their big summer titles until movie theaters opened in numbers that would make headlines for box office returns. Movie theaters didn't want to open if they were only going to be showing the same movies people have been watching on home video for years.

We saw major titles, like A Quiet Place Part II, F9 The Fast Saga, Black Widow, and more delayed. Studios decided to put some animated titles on premium video on demand instead, and Disney moved its live-action Mulan to its Disney+ streaming service as a premium rental that requires an ongoing membership to keep active.

No movies moved more often than Unhinged and Christopher Nolan's Tenet. The former is taking the pioneering position, while Tenet is opening September 3.

This is all wonderful news for moviegoers around the country! Keep in mind that most theaters will be imposing safety protocols to keep people as safe as possible, and most are requiring online ticket purchases. By following the guidelines, we can work together to keep others from getting sick, and to keep movie theaters open!

We recommend that you visit the Showtimes page for Unhinged and buy your tickets online, and then visit the theater's official website for information about face masks and other steps that will be required for a safe and smooth moviegoing experience!
