I was watching some YouTube videos today and a long-form ad from Apple appeared before a video that I wanted to watch. Usually, pre-roll ads don't get very far before I hit the "Skip" option, but this one grabbed me and I watched the entire 15+ minute ad.
The ad is from Apple and is presumably promoting their Mac product, but it's much more short-form documentary than it is a blatant ad. Staff members at Skywalker Sound are interviewed about their experiences working on movies and TV shows in the Star Wars franchise, the Jurassic Park movies, and more.
Al Nelson, who worked on Jurassic World: Dominion, Cars 2, and Oblivion has a voice-over that sets the tone:
If you were to close your eyes... and just listen to the sounds... could you identify the movie, and where we are in the movie. Everything is just so... iconic.
I'm a big fan of movie sound, and this video strikes at the emotional response that I have to movies with fantastic sound design. This video shows why it's so important to seek out movie theaters with good sound presentations and to invest in a proper sound system in your home theater environment (life is too short for soundbars or, gasp, built-in TV speakers).
For an advertisement, I have to hand it to Apple for keeping the promotion to a minimum while making compelling content that still achieves the intended purpose.
