Announcement Graphic

The College Point Multiplex Cinemas in Whitestone, New York is closing May 7, 2024, according to an announcement on the movie theater's Facebook page.

Located near the Whitestone Expressway just west of Linden Place, the theater originally opened in May 1999. The announcement reads as follows:

It has been our pleasure to serve the Queens community with great movie-going for many years.

Due to a business decision, May 7, 2024 will be our last day of cinema operations.

We thank you for your patronage and hope you have made wonderful movie memories at our cinema.

The news follows the closure of the Linden Boulevard Multiplex Cinemas in Brooklyn in January and the announcement that the Jamaica Multiplex Cinemas in Jamaica, New York will be closing April 30, 2024. All three are/were operated by Showcase Cinemas, which is owned by National Amusements. When the closure of the Jamaica location was first announced (for June), it was mentioned that the College Point location may close as well, and now we have confirmation of that fact.

According to news articles (see list below), the College Point movie theater will be replaced by a logistics center, which seems like a very inglorious replacement for a place that has been serving movies to the community for 25 years. The best way to make sure that more movie theaters do not suffer the same fate is to patronize them. Movie theaters (for the most part) are not charity organizations. They survive by providing a service to a paying public, so buy tickets and concessions and enjoy the movies!

Until it closes in May, you can visit the Showtimes page for the College Point Multiplex Cinemas to see what's playing and when, and to buy tickets online.

Afterward, moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, including the Regal Tangram in Flushing and the AMC Bay Terrace 6 in Bayside.
