On March 30, 2016, Yamaha announced the availability of a firmware update for three receivers and an AV preamp processor to enable DTS:X decoding and support for HDMI 2.0a (which enables HDR playback). In February, the company promised that the update would be available in "spring 2016" and "early March" (which are non-overlapping timeframes), so the end of March is close enough that we'll call this update on-time.
Yamaha RX-A3050
Additionally, the update includes support for HDMI 2.0a, which enables HDR playback from media devices, such as the new Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player. The new firmware is identified as version 1.77 and applies to the RX-A1050, RX-A2050, and RX-A3050 A/V receivers and the CX-A5100 preamp processor.
The firmware update is available on Yamaha's support web site for the RX-A1050, RX-A2050, and RX-A3050, and for the CX-A5100, and can be downloaded to a USB flash drive for updating the units, or the update can be requested from within the on-screen interface and downloaded directly using the directions outlined on that site. It is recommended that direct updates be done with a wired network connection to prevent any issues that may come from a wifi connection being lost during the update.
According to the aforementioned support web site, the firmware includes the following:
- The latest multi dimensional surround sound DTS:X playback
DTS:X decode
Neural:X upmixing processing
DTS Dialogue Control - HDR (High Dynamic Range) pass through and GUI overlay
- Connectivity improvement with Rhapsody/Napster service as well as some STBs/TVs via HDMI.
- MusicCast functionality improvement
- Search function for vTuner
- Sort function for "Favorites"
- “Recents” feature to display recently listened 40 songs
- Audio sync of its external inputs with other MusicCast models in MusicCast Link mode. Some conditions may apply.
- Speed Boost in Link Control (suitable for wired connection)
- Fixing network initial setup issue when using WiFi WEP security method
Enthusiasts on the AVS Forum have begun to download the update and post their first impressions of playing the already-released DTS:X titles on Blu-ray, so if you're interested, select the links below:
