Theater PhotoThe Silver Screen Theatre in Pensacola, Florida closed September 2, 2013. An article published in the Pensacola News-Journal mentions that the theater closed because of the costs of converting their four screens to Digital Cinema Projection systems:

Operating manager Brian Estrada said that the old standard of moviemaking, 35 mm film, is quickly disappearing, and the Silver Screen Theatre didn’t have the resources to keep up with the shift.“(The movie studios’) plan is that after December, they’re not going to release any more 35 millimeter movies,” Estrada said. “It would cost us about a quarter of a million dollars to switch all our equipment over to digital.”

Estrada said that since the conversion to digital wasn’t financially feasible, the ownership decided that the end of summer, the theater’s busiest season, would also herald the end of the business.

Moviegoers in the area will need to visit one of the other nearby theaters, such as the Carmike Pensacola Bayou 15 or Carmike 10 - Pensacola.
