Just this morning, I reported on the closing of the Marcus Rivoli Cinema, and this afternoon, we have news of a scheduled re-opening date with the new owners.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel today is reporting that the Cedarburg Landmark Preservation Society Inc. has scheduled an opening date of December 29, 2006 for the Rivoli Cinema:

[Donald] Levy, 72 and a practicing attorney, heads the preservation society and said he hopes that the Rivoli sequel succeeds.

The theater has 280 seats, and ticket prices for all the upcoming Rivoli movies will be $3, except Tuesday nights when tickets will be $2.

Mostly volunteers will run the revamped Rivoli. "If we're going to succeed, we're going to have to have community and merchant support," Levy said.

Movie theaters are integral to the character of small towns, and worth saving, Levy said.

"When I was a kid, Friday night was a big night in Cedarburg," Levy said. "The farmers came to town to do their shopping, and the stores were only open on that one night.

If the theater is to succeed, it will need the dedicated support of volunteers to staff the theater and the support of the community to attend. Single-screen theaters are a rarity in these days of 20-screen multiplexes, and I hope that it succeeds. I have contacted Mr. Levy and offered the assistance of The BigScreen Cinema Guide in their efforts.
