Pixar's 'Cars' has Motown Ties

Posted on Wednesday, April 19th, 2006 and updated on Wednesday, April 19th, 2006 11:13 AM

It might be a blip of publicity that we're already hearing and reading about Cars which doesn't open until June 9th, or it's a sign that a hype engine with enormous displacement is just getting fired up. The Detroit News published a story about the ties between the Pixar movie and Detroit automakers:
...there are several GM vehicles -- new and old -- in the movie. For example, the 1959 Impala lowrider is a car customizer called Ramone in the film. Tex, a big-time race car sponsor, is a 1975 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. A green modern-day Hummer makes an appearance, too, and Tihanyi believes that Mater, a beat-up but endearing tow truck that's a main character in the movie, is based on a 1950s Chevrolet pickup.
Also included is a Porsche 911, a Mercury police cruiser, and several vehicles of Pixar's design. A lot of detail went into the movie, and the article talks about the effort that Pixar invested to make it realistic, from the sounds of the cars to the paint colors. Read the story for more information!
