Paramount and Dreamworks Animation dropped a bombshell today when they announced that they are going to be supporting the HD DVD high definition media format exclusively.

The exclusive HD DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.

If you had the "Blades of Glory" Blu-ray on pre-order, you can expect that your order has been canceled. If you were planning on picking up Blu-ray editions of "Top Gun" or the Tom Clancy "Jack Ryan" movies ("The Hunt for Red October" et al.), you're going to be disappointed unless you have an HD DVD player.

Previously, Paramount was neutral, releasing movies like "Babel" and the "Mission: Impossible" installments on both formats. Dreamworks Animation had yet to release any movies on either format, but the questions were on whether or not "Shrek the Third" would be released on one or both formats.

Home theater enthusiast sites are abuzz about this latest news in the high definition media format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray. The age-old debates will rage on forever, with everyone claiming that everyone else is wrong. "Less filling" and "tastes great" are nothing compared to the fervor that enthusiasts can have for their format of choice!

Paramount and DreamWorks Animation Each Declare Exclusive Support for HD DVD

(NYSE: VIA and VIA.B) and DreamWorks Animation SKG (NYSE: DWA), each announced today that they will exclusively support the next-generation HD DVD format on a worldwide basis. The exclusive HD DVD commitment will include all movies distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films, as well as movies from DreamWorks Animation, which are distributed exclusively by Paramount Home Entertainment.

The companies each said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs. Paramount Home Entertainment will launch its exclusive HD DVD program with the release of the blockbuster comedy hit "Blades of Glory" on August 28th and follow with two of the biggest grossing movies of the year "Transformers" and "Shrek the Third". These three titles alone represent more than $1.5 billion in box office ticket sales worldwide.
