As monster movies go, this is about as good as it gets! I had high hopes for this latest version of Godzilla, but I tried very hard to temper my enthusiasm so that I didn't go in with such high expectations that there would be no way for the movie to meet them. As it turns out, those concerns were either unfounded or well-advised, as I came away very satisfied.

Of course, you're not going to get Oscar-worthy performances here, and there are some plot holes that could welcome a fairly good-sized truck without issue, but none of that matters as you see a major U.S. city become the battleground between monsters and a couple humans do their best to keep up. This is par for the course, and if you go in expecting something else, you're in the wrong genre.

This Godzilla is much more like the Godzilla of old than the Godzilla of 1998 that saw Matthew Broderick in the futile human role and the big guy as the aggressor. This Godzilla is more like what I remember as a kid, where some gargantuan beast is about to make mincemeat of some unsuspecting population, and no amount of human hubris is going to make a bit of difference.

The visual effects are top-notch, and the Dolby Atmos soundtrack was very well-done with great amounts of floor rumbling bass during the monster action and sounds emanating from various corners of the theater at just right times and places.

All the effects-laden actions scenes in the world don't matter much if you aren't drawn into the action and care for the protagonists. I found myself fully into seeing how the story would unfold and the entire theater cheered when the right side got the upper hand and groaned when it took a beating. That's a sign of a good movie, no matter what the subject matter or characters involved.

This is a movie that should be seen in a theater with a big screen and a sound system that can keep up and deliver all the goods. See it in Atmos if you can!

Saw the 2D version.

Didn't know much about the story of this film going in, which I think was good. I enjoyed it quite a lot. I did find some of the characters distracting though. In the beginning I couldn't stop staring at Bryan Cranston's hair. Dunno if it was a bad wig, or just the wrong color, but I found it hard to concentrate on anything else but his strange hair. Similarly, every time Elizabeth Olsen's character was on screen, all I could think about was "there's one of the Olsen sisters". Fortunately I didn't think her character was very strong, and she wasn't in a whole lot of the film anyway.

But we don't go to a Godzilla movie to see humans, we go for the super-sized monsters. Any they don't disappoint! What works best is that the monsters don't care about the humans, so none of the destruction is intentional, it's just that everything was in the way of what they are doing, or where they are going.

The logistics of almost everything about the story leaves so many questions unanswered, but that's okay, since this is a summer blockbuster that you aren't supposed to think about.... just enjoy. Any enjoy it I did.

While I can't quite put a "See Now" on it, you are going to want to make sure you see this film in a theater with a really good sound system, particularly the sub-woofer.

"Godzilla" returns to the big screen one again and once again the monster is uyp against bug looking creatures who are out to destroy cities in it's path. I would probaby call it a monster vs. monster movie, but I wouldn't call it that. What's different about this godzilla movie is the human element that made the movie better for me. The cast is impressive with the likes of Bryon Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins and Juliette Binoche. Especially the performance from Olsen. she is so impressive, I can't wait to see her again in the next Avengers movie. It's also nice to see Sally Hawkins on the big screen again. This is the much better monster movie that last Summer's "Pacific Rim," because the human element didn't show down "Godzilla" like it did with "Pacific Rim."

A movie that's worth seeing and hearing (Seriously, Godzilla's roar in full Dolby Surround Sound is breathtaking) on the big screen. The story, character and acting is better then most big blockbusters, but let's face it, that's not what you're seeing this movie for. Its just a bonus. We're here to see Godzilla fight giant monsters. The movie does not disappoint. The movie teases the viewer for a while, but when things get going, it is spectacular to watch.
