A terribly unwatchable movie which the violent levels are high and the undead are hard to watch. Even Tom Cruise who is in the lead couldn't save the movie. His presence could save the movie. the movie is the first of the so-called "Dark Universe" movies. Sadly, the film went in the wrong direction. As I watch the movie, it reminded me of seeing the 2008 version of the Mummy and it was the best of the Mummy movies from last decade. there was a cliffhanger in the end, where they found out that there mummies in Peru. Sadly, theyr didn't follw up and now we stuck with this horrible movie. Russell Crowe plays Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If there's a next monster movie in the Dark Universe series, I don't know what it is, but it better be better than this or the series will be short live. Oct 31, 2024
This is an example of how a bad combination of ingredients leads to a bad movie, even if, on paper, it seemed like a good idea. Universal thought they had a winner on their hands, and they were going to use it to launch a new "Dark Universe" franchise to capture some of the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Those dreams were dashed when this movie crashed and burned. How did it happen? You have a classic horror story of "the mummy" that has been around since 1932. You have Tom Cruise as the lead star and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman) and Annabelle Wallis (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) as co-stars. You have great CGI at your disposal. All those ingredients don't make up for the fact that the major ingredient wasn't up to the task: its story. Time and time again we've seen examples of a half-baked story sabotaging all the other elements that should have made for a surefire hit. Without a compelling story and characters to tell it, all the CGI and star power in the world is not going to save it. And that's the case with this movie. And that's why the Dark Universe never took off. Looking for more opinions?Check out our Featured Movie Reviews for The Mummy. |
