Twentysomethings on New Year’s Eve in 1981 try to deal with lonliness and relationships. Advertised as sort of an 80’s American Graffiti, I felt betrayed by the filmmakers, who obviously used this ploy as a gimmick to take advantage of 80’s nostalgia. A couple of characters make reference to the year and there’s enough 80’s music to fill a soundtrack, but there’s no other reason this movie wasn’t set in the present. An awful screenplay and not much better acting bring it down even further. Don’t ask me how Christina Ricci got involved in this mess. Ben Affleck receives top billing but only has a few scenes (again, rope that audience in). There’s only one funny line in the whole picture. It’s uttered by Janeane Garafalo, who is also unfortunately relegated to but a cameo, but even she couldn’t have saved this dog. Get an ash tray, put out your butt, and stay as far away from 200 Cigarettes as possible.
