John Wayne is best known for his Westerns, but he acted in other genres as well. In this movie, he stars as a seasoned veteran skipper of a German steamer just as Britain declares war on Germany. Even though he is critical of the Nazi regime, he endeavors to avoid interment by the British in an Australian harbor by leaving port and evading capture. His dedication to his men and his ship outweighs his dislike of the current situation.

Complicating his mission is the fact that he’s friends with the British officer chasing him and that he’s been tasked with transporting an intelligence officer (played by Lana Turner) who was attempting to marry his British friend to infiltrate the British military.

While this will not rank at the top of Wayne’s movies, it’s plenty enjoyable.
