A good if not a great movie. Someone wrote that "A Quiet Place" is the best Steven Spielberg Movie, the only problem is that the film isn't directed by Spielberg, but by John Krasinski, who also co-wrote the movie. I love the pacing of the movie which reminds me of the 1959 movie "The Diary of Anne Frank." In both movies a family must maintain their silence or else they will be killed. they hide in farm house where the wife (Emily Blunt) gives birth while the rest of the family members fend off the aliens where they are blind, but the got super hearing. Which explain why they had to walk bare footed and on special soil. there were a lot of tense moments between the family and the alien. Right now there are a lot of film critics who praise this movie. Rotten Tomatoes give it 97%. I recommend the film with guarded opportunism. It could get a number of Oscars like last year's "Get Out." I like the movie, but I like "10 Cloverfield Lane" better. May 21, 2018
A Quiet Place has thrills and suspense galore, as you silently watch a well-crafted story unfold. Oct 9, 2018
A Quiet Place is an interesting take on the traditional apocalypse theme by having the cause be an invasion of creatures that attack based on sound, forcing everyone to be absolutely silent to survive. This creates a situation where every sound you hear is precious, and possibly life-threatening. At the beginning of the movie, we are introduced to a wonderful family headed by real-life husband and wife, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. Their efforts to eke out an existence in this apocalyptic environment are admirable, and not without peril and loss. While their performances, as well as those of the actors playing their children, are very good, the most effective performance is by the sound mix for the movie. Being based on the impact of every sound you make, this movie hinges on the effective use of sound, both the presence and the absence of sound. Fortunately, it delivers! I watched this movie at home on a 7.1.4 Atmos-equipped sound system, and it makes very effective use of every speaker to convey the story unfolding on the screen. When characters are hiding from the monsters in a lower room, you hear the monsters moving above you. It's movies like this that can justify an Atmos system! Even if you don't have an immersive sound system, you can enjoy the fact that the sound people did an excellent job of throwing you into the story. You will, however, need to watch this movie in a quiet environment to get much of anything from it. Sure, there are plot holes that you notice if you look too hard, but that's the case with any horror/thriller movie. If all the characters made the right decision all the time, and if they did things that you think about later in the comfort of your own home on your comfortable couch (not being chased by carnivorous monsters), then there wouldn't be enjoyable movies to enjoy in the moment, right?
