Being a fan of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, I was eagerly anticipating this movie. I came away disappointed, but only slightly.

Science Fiction is largely an allegory of real-life situations set in a futuristic place and/or time. The movie's time setting of just 40 years into the future seems somewhat optimistic for the progress of technology, but It's easy to set aside any concerns given the quality of the CGI work. It is the weaving of those elements into an enjoyable and engaging story where this movie falls a little flat. The story is a little too simple to be satisfying and while it toys with the concepts of love, civil rights, and military overreach, it stops short of going anywhere interesting with any of them.

The visuals are great, the sound is very good, and Hans Zimmer's score never beats you over the head like so many recent superhero movies tend to do. I had the choice of seeing this in an Atmos-equipped auditorium and a ScreenX auditorium, and chose the former. I think the latter would have been the better choice as the trailer I've seen in ScreenX made it look like the extra side content would have been integrated well. Too bad we have to choose!

If given the choice between seeing The Creator and seeing Rogue One again, I'd choose Rogue One. It had a more compelling story and more interesting characters.
