Sequels are challenging. How can they get the lightning that struck the first time, all while not overstaying the welcome that engendered those positive feelings for the original that made it worth making a sequel?

One of my rules for a successful sequel is for most of the original cast to return. Ben Affleck returns as hitman/accountant Christian Wolff, and Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and J.K. Simmons all reprise their roles as well. Sadly, Anna Kendrick is nowhere to be found. Additional rules I have for a successful sequel is that it extends what was enjoyable about the one that came before, and that it does not spoil the regard I have for its predecessors (and the franchise, when applicable).

I’m happy to report that The Accountant 2 succeeds on those fronts. This is much more about the two brothers, and I think that’s its strength. A lesser sequel would have inserted a new relationship subplot between the main characters, but they wisely chose not to do that.

While the sequel lacks the originality of the first installment, it does a good job of justifying its existence. It even makes me look forward to another chapter of Christian Wolff‘s story. (But maybe bring back Anna Kendrick?)
