"Secret Window" is based on a story by Stephen King. King interpretations haven't had much luck lately (remember "Dreamcatcher"? I really wish I didn't. . .). "Window," however, has a few things going for it: it's based on one of King's more character-driven pieces, it stars the impeccable Johnny Depp, and it's written and directed by the screenwriter of "Panic Room." "Panic Room" was one of the most suspenseful movies I've ever seen; Koepp, the writer, seems to have learned a few things by penning it and also by working with David Fincher. Fincher is a big fan of long, sweeping shots that let the audience get a feel for the situation (take the exploding apartment scene in "Fight Club" as a prime example), and Koepp uses this technique here to great effect. This movie has a certain visual style that works very well. Johnny Depp is excellent in the lead role. He brings a little bit of his Jack Sparrow swagger to the depressed, sleep-aholic writer he plays, and it works well. John Turturro dons the hick-speak again as the villain, which bugged me because every time he opened his mouth I'd just be thinking "Petey done got himself loved up and turned into a horny toad!" (disregard this if your haven't seen "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?") The rest of the cast does a good, if not outstanding job. I was very interested in what was happening to the Depp character for most of the movie. Unfortunately, at the end we finally know for sure that it was based on Stephen King story. Some reviewers have said that the twist at the end is telegraphed and anyone will pick it up, but I didn't. Thinking about it later, there were plenty of clues along the way, but it certainly wasn't obvious. My problem was that I thought it didn't fit the tone of the film at all. For me it felt like they had no real end for the situation the Depp character was in, so threw in some "Sixth Sense" style crap at the end (I know this isn't the case, it just felt like it to me). Another problem I had was that there were a lot of suspenseful scenes with no payoff, and well as a lot of those cheesy "fake scares" (is the guy in the car dead? or is he just sleeping?). All in all, though, it's a very suspenseful ride to a somewhat disappointing ending, but it's worth seeing simply for the magnificently dishevelled performance by Depp. Mar 18, 2004

A shocking well-made thriller starring Johnny Depp as a writer who is terrorized by a southern who accussed him of copying his work. Based on the Stephen King book, this film is a shocker. Well-made and scary. \"Secret Window\" loves to shock and surprise you. Mar 22, 2004
Not your usual thriller. Durring the movie you will think, "wait, they can't do that." and it happens, and everything is ok, because that's the way it was ment to be. A good rainy night flick, very entertaining. Mar 26, 2004
The movie was good but don't see it if you're already depressed. It's 'dark' and moody. Unpredictable. Mar 27, 2004

I enjoyed this movie and Depp is definitally a great actor. I have to say I was really disappointed with the ending. They could have done something quite different and made this movie great and be something to talk about. May 15, 2004
Ironic twist- I didn't see it coming. I was surprised I enjoyed this movie as much as I did because it is not my typical genre. I went to this movie alone as a "get away" and the time just fit my scheudle. It was a pleasant surprise! This is a worth while see! Mar 8, 2006
Somewhat creepy after all is said and done, but Depp gives a great performance. There's enough going on to warrant multiple viewings, but once is enough for me. Looking for more opinions?Check out our Featured Movie Reviews for Secret Window. |
